Toray has developed a new type of carbon fiber with high strength and high modulus

    Toray  has developed a new type of carbon fibre that is 30% stronger than previous products.Even if the use of carbon fiber can be reduced, it can maintain the performance of formed parts and reduce the weight of aircraft.Toray will first promote the product's use on golf equipment and drones, aiming to be used on aircraft by the second half of 2020.

 

   It is difficult to balance the strength and elastic modulus of carbon fiber. Compared with previous products, the new carbon fiber has improved tensile strength while maintaining a high elastic modulus.

 

   The new carbon fiber has an elastic modulus of 377GPa and a tensile strength of 5.7 GPa.Some analysts believe this is the first time in the world to mass produce at this level, and the two functions of carbon fiber.

 
   At present, toray is able to control the internal structure of the fiber on the nanometer scale, so that the orientation of the fine grains in the fiber is consistent.The new product maintains the same elastic modulus as the existing M40J high-modulus carbon fiber product, and increases the tensile strength to the level of T800 grade carbon fiber.
 
  The use of carbon fibre as an alternative to metal in aircraft and cars is increasing.The aim is to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency.From the development cycle of longer aircraft, hopefully from the next generation of adoption.Toray thinks it could also be used in electric aircraft powered by electric motors and batteries.
